CPAP Therapy can change your life with added energy, enthusiasm and psychological outlook.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea is easily treated with CPAP. However, another form of Sleep Apnea exists that requires machines with other capabilities. This is Central Sleep Apnea. This situation has the added complication that the brain doesn’t tell you to breath. The percentage of people with this situation is much smaller then the estimated 18-24 million people with OSA. Again your sleep study would have identified this condition. Don’t get excited, we have machines to treat this other form also.
CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure, and just as the name suggests is simply a flow of air (not oxygen) through your mask into your lungs. Sometimes a patient may need supplemental oxygen along with the CPAP and this is easily provided. CPAP does not cure Sleep Apnea but does effectively treat it.
In order for your CPAP to function properly, a “tight” seal must be maintained. Any large airleaks will reduce the pressure in your lungs and may allow your airway to obstruct again. Your mask should fit so that no leaks are felt, but tightening too much will cause discomfort for you and will also probably cause leaks. Our Sleep Care Services include:

Obstructive sleep apnea [OSA] occurs in the lower stages of sleep as your respiratory muscles relax in order to recuperate from the day’s activity. These muscles relax up to 80% and in some individuals they actually collapse. As you attempt to breath, the obstructed airway prevents you from getting a breath. This is the source of the noise that your spouse has been complaining about. Obstructed Sleep Apnea often causes snoring, grunting and other unpleasant noises. You may also have Restless Leg Syndrome. These symptoms also exist in other situations so don’t tell everyone who snores that they have Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

The therapy for OSA is very simple but very tough to get used to. Your sleep study determined how much airflow is needed to prevent your upper airways from collapsing. The number your Doctor chose was the amount of airflow needed to alleviate 90% of your obstruction. This figure is expressed as centimeters of water pressure usually between 4-20 cmh2o.
