CPAP

CPAP, or continuous positive airway pressure, is a treatment that uses mild air pressure to keep the airways open. CPAP typically is used by people who have breathing problems, such as sleep apnea. CPAP also may be used to treat preterm infants whose lungs have not fully developed. For example, doctors may use CPAP to treat infants who have respiratory distress syndrome or bronchopulmonary dysplasia (brong-ko-PULL-mun-ary dis-PLA-ze-ah). CPAP treatment involves the use of a CPAP machine, which has three main parts:
- A mask or other device that fits over your nose or your nose and mouth; some styles use straps to keep the mask in place while you're wearing it.
- A tube that connects the mask to the machine's motor.
- A compressor that blows air into the tube.

Some CPAP machines have other features as well, such as heated humidifiers. CPAP machines are small, lightweight, and fairly quiet. The noise that they make is soft and rhythmic.

Respira offers many kinds of CPAP machines and masks and our clinical staff is adept at helping patients select the mask that best accommodates their wants and needs. Once your doctor prescribes CPAP for you, let Respira’s friendly and knowledgeable staff help guide the way to better breathing and a more restful night’s sleep.

Bi-level Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP) machines, similar to CPAP machines, help a patient get more air into their lungs. Unlike a CPAP machine, however, a BiPAP machine uses variable levels of air pressure instead of continuous pressure. Both types of machine are particularly effective in treating Obstructive Sleep Apnea, however BiPAP machines can offer more benefits than CPAP machines for patients suffering from diseases such as congestive heart failure or a collapsed lung because it assists the full cycle of breathing with its varying pressures.

Sleep Supplies

Respira offers a wide variety of state of the art masks and CPAP replacement supplies such as masks, headgear, filters, tubing, and humidifier chambers. We also provide our patients with a proactive outreach program to remind you by email, phone or personal call when it is time for supply replacement. When requested, we ship you your supplies directly to your door with no shipping charge.

Throughout your treatment, the components for your CPAP or BiPAP machine will need to be replaced on a regular basis to maintain safe and healthy results. Depending on the item, the frequency of replenishment can vary. Respira Medical offers several options to ensure that you are never without these vital components such as reminders via email, phone or personal call.

A basic list of supplies and the recommended frequency of replenishment are provided below to serve as an example of what to expect during treatment:

Monthly
Nasal Pillows
- Even with normal use these items stretch, crack and wear away, causing leaks which diminish the effectiveness of your therapy.
- Cushions and Seal
- Tightening and compression from normal use erodes the seal and diminishes the effectiveness of your therapy. Effective pressure seals are essential to your therapeutic success.
- White HEPA Filters

Every 3 Months
- Tubing
- CPAP tubes are designed to be pliable for greater freedom while you sleep. Unfortunately, this also makes them more likely to tear and leak. They are also a common source for bacterial buildup.
- Disposable Filters
- Just like the air filter in your home, these items need to be replaced regularly. Failure to do so will cause your CPAP machine to work harder, shortening its life span significantly. Also, like your tubing, filters are a common source for bacterial buildup.
- Mask
- Just like your Cushion and Seal, normal use weakens the headgear and the ability to seal which causes ineffective air flow and loss of the prescribed pressure.

Every 6 Months
- Water Chamber
- Like your tubing and filters, bacterial buildup (and in some instances, chemicals from cleaning) can build up here and enter your lungs through the machine’s air flow system.

NPPV Therapy (Non-Invasive Positive Pressure Ventilation)

NPPV is a form of mechanical support in which positive pressure delivers a mixture of air and oxygen throughout the respiratory tree via a noninvasive interface. It is a preferred method of management in cases of impending respiratory failure as an alternative to endotracheal intubation. NPPV collectively includes several modalities of noninvasive ventilation, which can be delivered via a standard ICU ventilator or a portable device. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is applied throughout the respiratory cycle of a spontaneously breathing patient and is physiologically identical to constant positive end-expiratory pressure. Bilevel positive airway pressure (e.g., BiPAP) delivers two pressure levels according to the respiratory cycle and improves ventilation, oxygenation, and alveolar recruitment. BiPAP provides both an inspiratory positive airway pressure as well as a continuous expiratory positive airway pressure, and the difference between these reflects the tidal volume. NPPV can provide modes nearly identical to standard ICU ventilators, such as pressure, volume, assist control, or even proportional assist ventilation. Patient-ventilator interfaces for NPPV include a face mask, nasal mask or plugs, or a helmet that covers the head. Although the face mask may be less comfortable and more difficult to monitor for aspiration, it provides better physiologic performance (less resistance to airflow and less air leak) when compared to nasal devices.
